A firmware is actually the operating system(OS) of the mobile phone. Firmware and flash file is the same thing described in 2 different words. Whenever you need to flash a mobile phone, you will need to have its firmware. While the name of the operating system will be the same, a firmware will always be different for all models of cell phones. If you do not have it, you can easily get it from the internet. You can download it from any website. For example if you need the firmware file of Samsung 2252 model, you just need to type Samsung 2252 firmware download in a search engine like Google.
Now that you understood what a firmware is, you need to know that there are different versions of it. So it is preferable to use the latest version most of the times. An older version of flash file may not have all the features and extra apps that a latest version will have. But sometimes, only sometimes, it is required that you use and older version of a firmware due to some reasons like your handset is not supporting an upgraded version.
You will also need to have special flashing softwares for flashing. Some brands and models need special gadgets called flasher boxes or dongles which you will need to flash with the firmware you downloaded earlier.
Always make a backup of all your essential data before flashing or formatting a mobile phone because you will loose all of it in the process.
